Zentangle
Artist Statement:
1. Describe your artwork:
There are multiple elements of art that are present in my created art work. Those would include value, space, lines, shapes and form. Color was not included due to it being a zentangle, which generally have a color scheme of black and white. Also texture was not really used either , due to me wanting the observer of the piece of art to concentrate on the patterns in front of them rather than them thinking of how it feels. I’m also glad that my work came out looking like how I planned it to, yet I sort of preferred how it looked before I added the permanent marker.
2. How did you create your art?
When we were told that we would have to create a zentangle while incorporating any animal of our choosing, I had a good idea already of I wanted to create. I choose to do a “mythical creature” instead of an animal on earth just to change my style of work compared to rest of the students in my class. I looked multiple zentangle designs online in order to get ideas on which specific patterns I would add to my work. Once I decided that, it came down to drawing out the box frames with the correct measurements and sketching out everything I had in mind.
3. What is the big idea behind your artwork?
The big idea behind my artwork is to create something that would stand out from the rest of work done by the rest of my classmates. I have always loved wolves and foxes ever since I was young, so I would consider them my favorite animals. Anime is also something that I love watching in my free time, and that also inspired me to draw a “mythical creature”. A quote that I always been interested by is “beware a wolf in sheep’s clothing” and that is another reason for my choice for drawing what I did.
4. What were your goals for this artwork?
My goals that I wanted to achieve with my artwork was to give the viewer of my artwork the feeling that they were seeing something different from what they always see in their life. People are always seeing the same thing over and over multiple times when it comes to ideas in artworks. I want to change the thoughts of those people who believe that they have to copy other’s ideas in other to create something good. You can be inspired by other’s work, but I believe that everyone is able to create a piece of work that is in their specific style of art.
5. What are your overall thoughts of your artwork?
I am actually pleased by how my artwork turned out, but there are things that I would want to improve on if I could revise it later. There are some simple mistakes when it came to tracing lines over and filling in a certain area that I believe I can improve on in my next piece of artwork. This piece of work actually made me realize that I am able to create a well done product even if what I am being told to do is not technically in my comfort zone when it comes to art. In the past, I usually just sketched using normal pencils so when it comes to using markers I kinda feel pressured since I can not correct my mistakes. Yet this project sort of gave me a new appreciation for the meaning behind the quote “ Life is the art of drawing without an eraser”.
